Jay and Rob enjoyed their first experience at NPE in Indianapolis. It was quite an honor to be included with the stellar films on the opening night film block and to hear all of the passionate speakers address critical educational, social, and political issues ahead of election cycle.

The keynote speakers, especially Dr. Diane Ravitch, helped set the tone for progressive advancement in education policy, and both Rob and Jay had the good fortune to chat with Diane. Jay placed a copy of our film in Dr. Ravitch's hand, and she expressed her interest in watching and writing about our film. What an honor! It was a great experience.

August - September 2018
As we come to the end of our festival run, which began in the spring of 2017, we are proud of the places that our film has managed to travel, and we are thankful for the audiences that connected with our story. As we transition from a film looking for an audience, we are excited to be one that is sought after for screenings by teachers, schools, school systems, and organizations across the country.

We will be screening as a part of the
Films Across Borders: Stories of Women series in Washington, DC at American University for two nights in October with support from DC Labor Fest.

Clips from our film will also be featured in the opening night festivities at the 2018 National Conference in Indianapolis hosted by The Network for Public Education. National leaders in education will be in attendance, and the keynote speakers are pictured below.

We are honored to attend the conference and to connect with the national audience convening in Indiana.

We were honored to received the Platinum Founder's award from the DEFF team in Greenville, NC. We are also in talks with DEFF as they plan a screening opportunity for us in 2019. Stay tuned for details.
We are also proud to share that our film has been selected by the Knox Film Festival in Knoxville, TN. The screening details have not been posted, but if you or someone you know is in Knoxville this September, we hope to see you there!

Marsha Gordon, NC State film professor and co-host of Movies on the Radio, featured on The State of Things with Frank Stasio for North Carolina Public Radio - WUNC, included our film as a part of her must-see list in this article.

What an honor for Angela Panel Scioli and the At Large team to be included. We highly recommend that you see all of the films listed in the article.

If you agree with Dr. Gordon and must see our film, and we think you should, you will get another chance this summer.

The Down East Flick Fest in Greenville, NC officially selected our film for their festival program. No details yet, but we'll let you know when we know.

May 2018
PictureRob outside Cinema Village with former Leesville students, Haley Krall & Shelby Reilly, following the screening
May was a busy but an exciting month for our team and for the audiences that connected with the film.

As we mentioned in last month's update, we were accepted to the Worker's Unite Film Festival, and we made the trip to New York to participate in the discussion following the screening.

The film was well-received and two former Leesville students studying in the city came out to join the audience assembled for the screening. They were particularly moved by the film because it documented their senior year of high school, and they are also both graduating from university this month.

When we returned from New York, our team participated in the May 16th "Rally for Respect," which caught the nation's attention and hopefully the attention of North Carolina's General Assembly.

We were fortunate that our film received a homecoming of sorts in that we were able to screen on the day of the rally in the NC Museum of History, courtesy of the Longleaf Film Festival.

We are honored that our film was part of that historic "Rally for Respect" and was affiliated, once again, with the Longleaf Film Festival.

April 2018
April has been a busy month for our team, filled with exciting news. Angie (and the film) made The Washington Post, and we are planning screenings in May that we hope you will be able to attend.
We continued our partnership with PSFNC to screen at the Hunt Library in April, and we are screening again with PSFNC and the Wake County PTA to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week in May. Click on the image below to learn more about reserving a seat to this free event at The Cary.

We are also pleased to announce the upcoming screening at the Tryon Palace NC History Center, which is on South Front Street, adjacent to the historical site, in beautiful New Bern, NC on Friday May 4, 2018 at 6PM. Blake Wiggs will facilitate the discussion following the presentation of the film. Click on the image of Tryon Palace to RSVP for this free event.
Every filmmaker hopes to screen in New York City, and our team is excited to announce our official selection to the Workers Unite Film Festival in NYC on May 8, 2018 at 6PM. We are part of "Program 11: Public Employees Rock!" Our film is paired with "Creative Feds," a short about two federal workers that are also musicians. The Program 11 pairing seems appropriate and our screening is National Teacher Day!

March 2018
It's been a year since our premiere during the Teachers, Teaching, and Media Conference at Wake Forest University. Since March 2017, we've screened our film at other universities across our state and at universities & film festivals across the country. The film has received awards along the way, and we have learned a lot about the process of marketing and trying to distribute our film.

As we come to the final stages of our festival run, we've shared the film with our donors, so if you supported the film and elected to receive a perk through either the Indiegogo or Kickstarter campaigns, please contact us if you did not receive a code to stream the film.

Though we have not created DVDs or Blu-rays or digital downloads for individual purchase, our next goal is to give individuals the option to purchase a copy to own. When we get to that point we will let everyone know so that you can help share the news.

As always, thanks to everyone who supported us during every step along the way, from fundraising to production to theaters, hopefully one near you, we couldn't have done it without you.

January 2018
In the first month of 2018, we are proud to share that our film was screened in Oklahoma City's docLahoma Film Festival. As a part of the first annual festival, our film screened at 7:45 in the evening of January 14th at the Paramount Theater on film row. Impact Docs, which manages an online documentary competition based in La Jolla, CA, saw fit to bestow an Award of Merit to our film. We are particularly proud of this documentary-focused recognition because we believe in the transformative power of nonfiction storytelling, and it is an honor to be recognized among professionals with similar visions.

As the year of the film's release draws to a close, we are proud of how far the film has gone and how far we've come as a filmmaking team.

Earlier this month, Rob was featured by NC State's Humanities and Social Sciences News.

Jay also continues to lead presentations and screenings around the state, most recently at High Point University. The number of film festivals and awards the film has received continues to grow as well.

Picture
Most recently we received a Silver Award from Spotlight Documentary Film Awards, an Atlanta-based festival that highlights the achievements of independent filmmakers. At this point, we've screened the film in Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina. We hope this trend continues into the new year, so come see us at the movies!

November 2017
Picture
A diverse audience from across the country watching the film.
November has been a busy month for our team, and we've presented the film in some exciting new settings that we want to share.

Jay and Rob visited Atlanta for an SRI (School Reform Initiative) conference where Jay facilitated a session that involved a screening and an exploration of the film's implications through guided discussions.
Picture
Some of the questions Jay used to spark discussion in the session he facilitated.
We participated in an event at Meredith College where our team joined students and faculty for breakout discussions following the screening.
Picture
Rob chatted with Meredith students and faculty in one of the discussion groups. This one explored the impact of media on educators.
We also had our festival premiere in Florida at the Rendezvous Film Festival, hosted by the Amelia Island film community. Though we couldn't attend, the festival was well attended and was evidently a lot of fun.

September 2017
September is always crazy for teachers, and it was equally crazy for our filmmaking team. We were accepted and scheduled to screen with three film festivals in Louisville, KY - Amelia Island, FL - and Asheville, NC. As first-time filmmakers, festivals are difficult to predict, and both Louisville and Asheville proved to be disappointing in terms of turnout though not disastrous because we just keep getting the word out there. Amelia Island cancelled in the wake of Irma's tempest, but we know what weather can bring. If you've been following this film and these updates, you know what happened last year with Matthew. Stay tuned! We will share when we know about the Rendezvous Film and Music Festival in Amelia Island, FL.

Though the screenings in both Asheville and Louisville could've been better attended, we are very excited to be partnering once again with the National Humanities Center for another virtual screening, which will be followed by a panel discussion and webinar.

Teachers can earn CEUs and anyone may listen in as four teachers from across the United States explore the implications of our film. Rob and Jay will be online responding to questions that come through the chat feature, and we could not be happier for a second opportunity for national exposure with the NHC.
The Wake Democratic Party knows how to have a good time, so when they chose to honor Dr. June Atkinson at a private event at Caffé Luna in Raleigh, our filmmaking team was thrilled to attend the celebration of her leadership and to cheer on Dr. Atkinson.

It was also wonderful to reconnect with Yevonne Brannon of Public Schools First NC, Mark Jewell of the NCAE and John Wilson of the NEA, as we celebrated Dr. Atkinson's award.

July ended with a great article in the News & Observer about the film's growing national reach, and the month of August started off with the webinar hosted by the National Humanities Center.

We are honored by this attention and by the partnerships we've built with an organization like the National Humanities Center.

Spring 2017: Angie's dedication to teaching spills into her spring break.
We are pleased to announce that
we are an official selection to the
Longleaf Film Festival!

The film will screen during
Block A from 11:00AM - 1:00PM in the
Daniels Auditorium, Lobby Level of
the NC Museum of History
.

The festival screening is free to attend, and we plan to be there. The auditorium seats 300,
and seating is limited. We would love to have a packed house, so come on out and bring a friend!

In addition to applying to festivals and working on our marketing plan for the film, Jay and Rob have been putting some finishing touches on the cut this month, smoothing some rough edges and prepping the film for color correction.

Rob and his family also visited Angie and her family at the lake during their annual spring break outing. The weather was wonderful, the kids swam in the lake, and Angie was grading papers.

A teacher's work is never done.

MORE BIG NEWS!!!

We are starting to get the attention of both local and national news. Earlier this month, Katherine Meeks of The Huffington Post wrote a nice piece about the grant and our fundraising efforts, and WRAL came to Angie's to capture the tradition of Saturday Pancake Breakfasts! It was a lot of fun and that piece aired on January 25, 2017.

With a month remaining, we've already raised nearly 20% of our $10,000 goal. Though we have a long way to go, we are so honored by the pledges we've received. Thanks for all of the pledges and for helping us spread the word.
BIG NEWS!!!

We are pleased to announce the premiere for the film will be March 2nd at 7:30 PM at Wake Forest University as a part of the Teachers, Teaching, and Media Conference

our post production funding.
